I am very excited to have launched my Train For Life (TFL) blog and hope you enjoy this journey with me. You may be asking yourself, why did Terrie launch this blog and what kind of information is she going to be sharing. If not, still probably worth a little explanation, so you understand my motivation and mission. My blog will work in conjunction with my new company, Empower Health America, helping to encourage people to make more informed decisions regarding their health and lifestyle choices. It is one small way that I can give back to make the world a healthier place.
I will be posting health and wellness information, upcoming health and wellness events, sharing testimonials, TFL video shorts, blog posts on my perspective on topics that help you make more informed decisions regarding your health and well-being and a few random posts on varying topics. I love fashion, travel and sports, so expect to see a bit of information on these items as well. I plan on collaborating with like-minded people and integrating their voices into my blog as well. The more people that can help me champion for a healthier world, the greater impact we can have collectively. If you are interested in hearing more about my company feel free to contact me. I will also be launching a Wellness Empowerment Team soon so stay tune for more news on how you can get involved.
Highlights of my wellness journey:
I have been doing health advocacy work for 25+ years, I started teaching fitness classes over 3 decades ago, had the honor of being invited to the White House to be part of the first National Physical Fitness Day, was a 3 time National Aerobics Champion, produced 7 National Fitness videos...one with Sugar Ray Leonard, developed a kids based program focused on total body wellness entitled, Operation Jump-Start Slam Dunk Wellness, was a National fitness presenter for years, had an opportunity to represent several fitness products on TV and was featured in Train For Life wellness segments which aired on News 14 for four years. A share this to illustrate that I am no stranger to the world of health and wellness and over the years I have learned a bit about what total body wellness means and more importantly what it takes to truly feel healthy and happy.
Highlights of my corporate journey:
There has always been two sides to my life working in concert, my passion for health and wellness and my love for marketing and promotions. I am fortunate that my corporate career path has been filled with amazing jobs. Some career highlights include, working for USAir's In-flight magazine affording me the opportunity to live in 22 different cities over the course of 5 years, I helped start Elegant Bride Magazine, worked for Vogue Magazine in Manhattan and helped launch the NFL Carolina Panthers. All of my life's experience and work brought me to a cross-roads about 12 years ago when I asked myself, what can I do to make a difference in people's lives? That's when I launched Wellness Coalition America, a corporate health and wellness business. This decision allowed me to marry my avocation with my vocation. Marketing and promoting a business which allowed me to integrate my passion for educating and empowering people to live healthier lives was a perfect combination.
My struggles:
I am so blessed to have had many wonderful opportunities in my life and one would think I should be well balanced and healthy as a result. However, somewhere along the path of life...I lost my way. I look back at my life and have retraced the things that I feel impacted me. I know being the oldest of 5 with 3 half-brothers and 1 half-sister, growing up in a fractured home because of multiple divorces, attending 7 different schools growing up and living in environments which provided very little emotional support made up the perfect cocktail for me to become fear based, fiercely independent, hyper responsible, an over achiever, very self-critical and one who was eager to play the role of care taker and peacemaker. This was a toxic combination for me and one that lead to low self-esteem, a hard 10 year battle with an eating disorder in my 20's and several not optimal relationship choices along the way. However, there is a silver lining and I have learned so much as a result of my challenges. Adversity hits us all and what I have learned over time is I can take back my power through faith and the choices I make. So...I am learning to choose hope not fear, love not hate, faith not self-reliance, light not dark, gratitude not judgement and to hear yes you can rather than no you can't. It is from my life's experiences and challenges that I have broaden my perspective of wellness. At the core, it means the ability to connect to the things that bring you joy and importantly taking the time to follow your passion. I am blessed to be doing just that...empowering people to believe in themselves and to become their greatest advocates. I look at my life with such acceptance now and know everything happens for a reason. I became a high achiever in my career and found fitness as a way to deal with stress and anxiety....so all things really do work together for a greater good. It is this foundation that inspired me to be a fierce advocate for wellness and I hope by sharing a little piece of my life you have a deeper understanding of what drives me and why I do what I do. When your path has been dark and you begin to find the light you want to help others find their way as well. I was fortunate to have found fitness as an outlet and crossed paths with many amazing people/teachers who helped me along the way...Oran Perry, Jim Clark, Ben Derrick, Pam Hawthorn and Lynn Evans...I will forever be grateful.
I am beginning to find a true inner peace...the kind that allows me to hear that gentle voice which reminds me to stop doing so much and just start being. Of course I ignore this reminder often but at least I slow down to listen sometimes. :-)
My view of wellness has broaden:
My experience and own personal health journey has influenced the way a think about total body wellness today and my view on living a healthy life has certainly broadened. As a result, after 10 years with Wellness Coalition America I was inspired to launch another company, Empower Health America where I have created a total body wellness model, Train For Life. I designed the model to educate and empower people to live healthier and happier lives and to help people understand that living a healthy lifestyle is more than just exercise and eating healthy...it is about how you feel from the inside out. The TFL model focuses on 5 major dimensions of wellness: Move, Fuel, Relax, Maintain, and Connect. Health is multi-dimensional and requires us to slow down and take inventory on many levels. When you start to explore well-being on a deeper level you will realize how much there is to learn, to feel and to experience. To hear more about the TFL model click here.
I hope you enjoy my Train For Life blog and that it will serve as a source of information and motivation and will inspire you to become your greatest advocate. You may already be well down the path to good health or you could just be starting your journey, either way hold the course because your life will for ever be changed.
Give the gift of health by sharing my blog with:
Health enthusiasts
Friends and family
People who may need some extra encouragement to find their path towards total well-being
If you are already making healthy lifestyle choices, I both applaud you and challenge you to reach out to someone who may be struggling. You never know...your support and encouragement could change the course of their life forever.
